Fauland Photography goes Cinematography

For more than ten years Photography is my Passion and Profession. Architecture and Cityscapes have been and still are my main photographic themes. Projects for many different clients and assignments for the Photo Industry allowed me to travel around Europe and beyond. Many longstanding (business) relationships established – and I am very grateful for all of that.

The only thing I missed a little was the lack of ‘I go out and shoot whatever I want, where ever I want’ in the last few years. I am not complaining – to be able to do what I love every day and to get paid for it is a privilege not too many of us have.

In March 2020 the world changed for all of us – It was the beginning of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. During the first year ‘staying alive’ (both health- and business wise was my main perspective). But in the following year, I started deep-diving into my archive, and I re-lived many precious photographic memories.

This was a strong trigger to become a ‘true to himself artist’ again. Forcing a subject on myself would not have been the right thing to do. So, I decided to simply put out all antennas and wait for the Art to find me. This happened in February 2022 during an abandoned places workshop north of Berlin. A participant asked me about a function in her camera – the multi-exposure setting and how to use it. I responded – half-jokingly that ‘red roses on top of brides’ have never been sexy but decided to give it a try myself.

I was more than surprised and liked the first results. Shortly after browsing through the files of that day, I was convinced I had to change the subject: Why not shooting Architecture using this new to me technique of superimposing several layers of lines and fine structures? A trip to neighboring Strasbourg was the second attempt to explore this kind of Photography.

Already in a Cafe near my selected shooting location, browsing through the images on the screen of my camera, I was sure I found something interesting with huge potential. Back home at the computer, zooming into the shots of the day on a large screen, the amount of detail, fine structures, nuances in superimposed color gradients made me smile.

In the following month, shootings in Basel, Berlin, Duesseldorf, Duisburg, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hannover, Konstanz, Lausanne, London, Paris, Stuttgart and Worpswede followed. Today, I have 180GB of images on my server.

During all these shootings, three main images styles evolved: Horizontal or vertical shifts, rotations around one central, compositorial point as well as variations of the focal length (zoom) are applied directly in camera to create the final image. Very little to no postproduction is applied afterwards. In terms of color-grading a dedicated white balance plus the use of the FUJIFILM film simulations are the key parameters in the process. Talking for a moment about the gear used (Though, any camera able to create multi-exposures in camera is suitable) in my case FUJIFILM X-series and GFX-series cameras and lenses are the preferred choice. Especially, the color science you find in these line of cameras make the ‘straight out of camera-approach’ so appealing. Technically speaking, taking single frames and working with layers in Photoshop to achieve a multi-exposure is possible but would significantly disturb my creative process. While for commercial productions hours and hours of fine tuning the wanted final image is part of the process, here I enjoy the ‘painting with a brush on a canvas’ a lot.

The next step is a smart selection of my next shooting locations: Copenhagen, Marseille, Barcelona and hopefully next year Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo are on my to-do-list. Right now, the first exhibitions are in preparation – So, stay tuned and feel free to follow my usual channels to be up-to-date.

Along the road and thanks to so many comments, questions and discussions with so many of you another idea surfaced: A short film to document and explain the project and its spirit. This was like opening a secret door for me. Photography and Cinematography are miles apart when it comes to the conceptual process not to mention the technical aspects. ‘The one who does not evolve, cripples’. Now, I can say I very much enjoy this new chapter and I am learning like back in school – Various subjects like screenplay writing, ‘building a cinema camera from scratch’, preproduction, postproduction (Davinci Resolve) and all in-between.

I will take you with me along this journey and show you all my learnings, successes and failures. On a more daily basis the Instagram channels (@fauland.photography and @masteringlight) are a good place to stop by. As we are talking about ‘moving images’ my YouTube channel @fauland_photography is the obvious platform.

At the moment, I am mainly doing tests how to show the creative process of photographing multi-exposures in film-sequences.

Thank you for staying with me till here. And as always, I want to finish saying

Stay tuned ….
